Hand Lettering and Chalkboards

Howdy friends!  Welcome back to another instalment of Chalk It Up Signs’ thoughts and ponderings. This week, we explore hand lettering and chalkboards.  As we work at CIUS world headquarters, we often listen to radio programs.  Sometimes we turn to CBC Radio One for entertainment and last week, CBC featured a segment that really piqued our interest.  The host asked the question:

Is handwriting obsolete in the digital age?

Just click on the sentence above and have a listen.  It is about 18 minutes long and worth the time.  Guest Anne Trubek wrote an essay in the New York Times arguing that handwriting/hand lettering should no longer be taught in school.  Christopher Rousseau,  a graphic artist and co founder of Ligatures, argues that hand lettering “is this generation’s response to computers”.   Both combatants agree that technological advancements have made typing more popular and efficient.  Both also decide that hand lettering is still considered an important part of our culture.

Hand lettering and hand writing have always been used as a tool for learning and communication.  Even though many of us still use hand writing in our daily lives, the focus seems to be shifting to a more artistic or creative form of expression. The craft of forming letters and communicating a message by hand is still vital to our experience as humans.  Hand lettering is not dead.  It is evolving like everything else does.

Here at Chalk It Up Signs, hand lettering and chalkboards is what we do.  All of our chalkboard menus and chalkboard signs feature the artistry of hand lettering.  Our wonderful clients love having our chalkboards in their establishment because their patrons still crave hand drawn art and lettering and they can feel the time and attention that has gone into the craft.  Computer generated lettering has become ubiquitous but humans still need to see organic, hand crafted and unique lines, colours, shading and composition.

Below are just a few examples of hand lettering and chalkboards we have created at Chalk It Up Signs. We can combine hand lettering and chalkboards to create hand lettered chalkboard murals, hand lettered chalkboard menus, hand lettered chalkboard specials boards, hand lettered logo chalkboards hand lettered chalkboards for businesses or homes and more!
