When you order a chalkboard from Chalk It Up Signs we include the design and layout in your purchase price. A very common issue, when we start creating a layout and design for a customer, is fitting the full Menu on the chalkboard. In this blog I will take you through the choices you have. And include examples that will help in making the decisions of what to keep and what to add.
Our customers really love the “El Jalapeno” chalkboard shown here. Great text, images and a variety of menu items make this design a true piece of art. This chalkboard menu is 48″ high and 96″ long. It has approximately 15 items. This left room for a tile border, examples of the food, restaurant name and item descriptions were kept at 1″ high.But what do you do if you have 30 items? 50 items?
With breakfast, lunch, dinner, drinks and desserts it is easy to have more menu text than will fit. The text on a chalkboard can only get so small. Your menu needs to be readable from 6 to 10 feet. We have learned that 1″ or 72 pt is as smallest you should go. We can go down to 3/4″ but after that it becomes hard to read and hard to draw. It is also important to have “whitespace“, or room around text and images so the eye can rest and read what it is your selling.
Fitting the Full Menu On Your Chalkboard …
The Old Crow decided to remove item descriptions from the chalkboard and provide customers with a handheld menu with all the detail. This left plenty of room for their trade mark crow and some nice menu images. The sign became a focal point and created an identity for the restaurant.
